$A common very tall, stout, coarse perennial, forming extensive beds with its creeping rootstock; stems to 350cm or more, persisting through the winter as hard canes. Leaves greyish, smooth-edged to 5cm wide, collapsing in winter; ligulae in line of hairs. Inflorescence a spreading panicle, the numerous unawned, , usually dark purple spikelets with 2-10 florets and long silky hairs along the axis.\nHabitat: Fens, marshes, swamps, ditch sides, freshwater or brackish margins, damp clayey slopes.\nFlowering Season: August-October.\nDistribution: Throughout Europe.\n\nThis is a common Species in the Netherlands in the described Habitats.$
