Big Blue Octopus Octopus cyanea occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from eastern Africa to the Hawaiian Islands in a depth range from 0 to 150m, max. mantle length 22cm with arms to at least 80 cm. Big Blue Octopuses are found living in muddy, sandy, or rocky bottoms, and in seagrass beds. They create lairs or dens in crevices or coral rubbles within coral reefs. These dens aren't used for long term; on average individuals spend up to 35 days in one den. The Big Blue Octopus is one of the few octopus species that forage for food during the day. Like other octopuses, it feeds primarily on other invertebrates. Veined Octopus or Coconut Octopus Amphioctopus marginatus (ex. Octopus marginatus) occurs in temperate and tropical waters of the Indo-West Pacific in a depth range from 0 to 190 m, max. length 30cm, mantle length 10cm, max. weigth 400g. The Veined Octopus can bury itself in sand or mud. They also exhibit a curious behaviour adaption of using discarded clam shells and halves of coconut shells for protection. The octopus inhabits sandy and muddy habitats, that offer it little protection from passing predators. Discarded halves of coconut shells are common in waters near human settlements throughout Indonesia. When two halves fit together, the halves make a perfect refuge, difficult for predators to open. Amphioctopus marginatus lays up to 100 000 small eggs which hatch into tiny planktonic young. These are carried in ocean currents, accounting for its wide distribution.
