Sea lions are pinnipeds characterized by external ear flaps, long foreflippers, the ability to walk on all fours, short, thick hair, and a big chest and belly. Together with the fur seals, they comprise the family Otariidae, eared seals, which contains six extant and one extinct species in five genera. California sea lions are “eared seals” native to the West Coast of North America. They live in coastal waters and on beaches, docks, buoys, and jetties. California sea lions can be seen year round in Monterey Bay. Popular spots include docks and boats around Fisherman's Wharf and the Coastguard jetty in Monterey as well as Point Lobos Nature Reserve and Moss Landing harbor.
