The Red Urchin, blue-spotted urchin; Fire Urchin or False Fire Urchin, Astropyga radiata, is an urchin, with a test (shell) diameter of about 20 cm. It is found in the Indo-Pacific region. Maui Island, Hawaii
Blue Spotted Sea Urchin Astropyga radiata occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean from the African coast to Australia and to Hawaii in a depth range from 0 to 60m, usually 10 to 30m, max. test diameter 20cm. The species is often found in lagoons and bays where the substrate is sand, shingle or coral rubble. Sometimes many urchins collect together in one locality in dense aggregations. Astropyga radiata is mostly nocturnal and feeds by grazing on algae. The mouth is at the centre of the oral (under) surface where there are five powerful teeth. This urchin is light sensitive and can angle its spines towards an approaching threatening object, but rather than centralized eyes, Astropyga radiata has a distributed sensory system. Funny thing is that many people think the thing in the middle is the eyeball, but it is the rectum. The sexes are separate in Astropyga radiata. Eggs and sperm are liberated into the water column. After fertilisation, the larvae are planktonic and develop through several stages before settling on the seabed. Lembeh Strait, Indonesia 1°27'13.104 N 125°14'14.634 E at 12m depth

Sea Urchin Toxopneustes maculatus is a rare species of sea urchin found in the Indo-West Pacific. But the records are sparse. Specimens (mostly tests) have been reported from scattered localities in e.g., Réunion, Christmas Island, Palmyra Atoll, Marquesas/Nuku Hiva. The generic name Toxopneustes literally means poison breath, derived from Greek. No wonder: Toxopneustes maculatus is probably very poisonous. Toxopneustes pileolus (a congener) is well known to produce medically significant stings. If the poison of Toxopneustes maculatus can kill humans under circumstances or not, do not try. Treat this beauty as potentially hazardous! Black Feather Star Colobometra perspinosa occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific in a depth range from 0-122m, max. diameter 46cm. Colobometra perspinosa has only ten arms. Although many crinoid species have 10 arms as juveniles and add more with growth, this species does not.\nColobometra perspinosa is often clinged to gorgonians, like this specimen, exposed the open arms to the marine flow to optimise the nutriment capture. \nThe coloration is usually black but it can also be black and white, and even brown-gold for rare specimen.\nTriton Bay, Kaimana Regency, West Papua Province, Indonesia \n3°58'43.566 S 134°10'2.268 E at 12m depth
