Tristan Island just off the coast of the coastal port of Doaurnez, in Brittany. It is only about 450 metres long and 250 m wide but it has a rich history. In the 19th century, it became famous as the site of the first canning factory for sardines fished for in the Bay of Douarnenez, an important industry for the region. Tristan Island is steeped in legend, most notably the romantic tale of Tristan and Isolde. According to Breton folklore, the island was a refuge for the star-crossed lovers, who were forced to hide from the wrath of King Marc'h. The legend purports that their final resting place is hidden beneath two intertwined trees on the island.
