The most important and beautiful fountain in Siena was built in 1342 and completed in 1419 with the precious bas-reliefs of the Sienese artist Jacopo della Quercia. Some of the original bas-reliefs that survived over the centuries are now preserved in the Museum of Santa Maria della Scala, in Siena, replaced by some copies made in 1859 by the artist Tito Sarrocchi. Center of the ancient medieval life since 1169, the Piazza del Campo or simply the Campo is one of the most beautiful and famous squares in the world for its particular shell shape. In this space every year the seventeen historical districts of Siena compete in the Palio, one of the oldest horse races in the world. Siena is one of the most beautiful Italian cities of art, in the heart of the Tuscan hills, visited for its immense artistic and historical heritage and for its famous popular traditions. Since 1995 the historic center of Siena has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Image in high definition format.
