Royal Flush Hearts isolated on white

This is the Queen of Hearts from a well-known deck of vintage /antique (19th century) playing cards. It was printed in chromolithography by Bernard (Bernhard) Dondorf from Frankfurt aM, Germany, and the deck included characters from Shakespeare's plays as face cards. The Queen of Hearts is illustrated as Katherine (Catherine) of Valois (from the play (Henry V)). Bernard (Bernhard) Dondorf opened a lithographic printing business in 1833, first producing playing cards in 1839. His playing cards were popular for their designs and overall quality. He retired from the business in 1872 after producing popular and widely-copied designs for many years.

Popular combinations of poker cards on white background

These are the court cards / picture cards from the spades suit of Dondorf playing card pack No. 161, which carries the 'Baronesse' pattern on the reverse. These cards are printed using chromolithography by Bernhard Dondorf of Frankfurt aM in about 1900. Baronesse was a popular design that first appeared in 1892. These court / picture cards all show figures wearing white powdered wigs and velvet clothing. The letter 'B' stands for 'Bube', a rogue or knave, although in this case the figure is more in the nature of a nobleman. The Queen bears the letter D for Dame, while the King has a K for Konig. This particular deck comprises 32 cards for the game of Piquet, made up of the seven through King plus Ace of each suit. Piquet was one of the most popular card games of the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Queen of Spades

This is the Queen of Hearts from an antique (1880) pack of cards that features views and costumes from Switzerland. The title for the pack is Vues & Costumes suisse. Each court card (picture card) features the arms of two Swiss cantons, or member states. The Queen of Hearts features the arms of Zuric (Zurich) and Schaffhouse (Schaffhausen). Each court card also displays two different Swiss national costumes. The pack was issued by Jean Muller of Schaffhouse in Switzerland, and each of the 52 card backs depicts a different scene from Switzerland. The court cards / picture cards feature figures in national costume. The printing is by chromolithography.
