The Wawel Royal Castle is a castle residency located in Krakow, Poland. The castle is part of a fortified architectural complex erected atop a hill on the left bank of the Vistula River. For centuries the residence of the kings of Poland and the symbol of Polish statehood, Wawel Castle is now one of the country's top art museums.

The Monument to King Jan III Sobieski in Kraków's Matejko Square was created by sculptor Cyprian Godebski and unveiled in 1910. The equestrian statue commemorates Poland's most celebrated military monarch, who ruled from 1674-1696 and achieved legendary status for his decisive victory at the Battle of Vienna in 1683, where his Polish cavalry charge broke the Ottoman siege and halted Islamic expansion into Central Europe. Behind the monument stands the Church of St. Francis of Assisi, a Franciscan church originally built in the 13th century with its current baroque facade and distinctive twin green copper towers topped with golden spheres added during 17th-18th century renovations.
