Ponte Vecchio on River Arno of Florence in Tuscany, Italy. This medieval arch bridge was built in 1345 after its predecessors had been swept away by floods. On Hitler’s orders, the bridge was the only Florentine one spared when the Nazis retreated from Florence in August 1944. Floods in 1966 severely damaged the Ponte Vecchio, but it today stands proud, home to goldsmiths and jewellers after its many butchers were outlawed by decree in 1595 in order to clean up the area. Today the only menace to the bridge are love locks which are discouraged and incur a fine from authorities.

Florence, Italy is known as the birthplace of the Renaissance. Founded in 80 B.C. by Lucius Cornelius Sulla as a settlement for his soldiers, it was named Fluentia, which later became Firenze. Renown artists like Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Botticelli and Donatello all lived, studied and worked in Florence, along with architects like Brunelleschi, who designed the dome of the city's duomo, Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore. Florence has a colorful history as a political and financial center, dominated for over 150 years by the Medici family and is also known as a fashion center. Today, it's rich heritage in art can be enjoyed at several galleries and museums including the Uffizi and the Gallerie dell'Accademia, as well as the Pitti Palace (Palazzo Pitti). Pictured here is the Ponte Vecchio, a medieval bridge with shops along both sides. The first bridge on this spot of the Arno River was mentioned in a document dating back to 998 A.D. The existing bridge was built in 1345, and it was the only one of Florence's bridges not destroyed during World War II.
