The statue by Josef Vaclav Myslbek (1887-1924) is of Saint Wenceslaus. In the nineteenth century, the square was named after the patron saint of Bohemia. The equestrian statue of Saint Wenceslas was a Bohemian duke spreading Christianity. Murdered in 929 by his brother, he was declared a saint and became a national Czech symbol.
