The Sumatran tiger is a tiger subspecies whose natural habitat is on the island of Sumatra, is one of six tiger subspecies that still survive today and is classified as critically endangered in the red list of threatened species released by the IUCN World Conservation Institute. Wild populations are estimated at between 400-500, mainly living in national parks in Sumatra. Recent genetic testing has revealed unique genetic signs, which indicate that these subspecies may develop into separate species, if they are sustained.Habitat destruction is the biggest threat to the current population. Logging continues even in national parks which should be protected. 66 recorded Sumatran tigers were killed between 1998 and 2000.In 2017, the Cat Classification Task Force from the Cat Specialist Group revised the taxonomy of cats so that living and extinct tiger populations in Indonesia are now classified as P. t. sondaica
