Quito, Pichincha, Ecuador: the Metropolitan Cathedral of Quito (Catedral Metropolitana de Quito), a Spanish colonial temple located on the southwestern side of the Plaza Grande, holds the status of the Primate Cathedral of Ecuador. Although founded in 1535, its permanent stone construction began in 1562 under the direction of architect Antonio García. This Catholic edifice exhibits a complex architectural evolution resulting from centuries of reconstruction following earthquakes; it blends a 16th-century orthogonal plan with Gothic-Mudéjar arches, Baroque altarpieces, and the prominent Neoclassical Arco de Carondelet (c. 1805) which articulates the facade facing the square. The interior houses the mausoleum of Grand Marshal Antonio José de Sucre and significant colonial artworks by masters such as Caspicara and Miguel de Santiago. Unesco world heritage site.

Quito, Pichincha, Ecuador: the façade of the Iglesia de la Compañía de Jesús in Quito, Ecuador, is a monumental example of the Spanish Baroque style in the Americas. Carved entirely from gray Andean volcanic stone (andesite), the structure was completed in 1765. The design is characterized by its Churrigueresque ornamentation, prominently featuring six massive Solomonic columns (twisted columns) that flank the main portal and central window. The façade is embellished with statues of Jesuit saints, including St. Ignatius of Loyola and St. Francis Xavier, set within niches. Located in Quito’s UNESCO-listed Historic Center, this architectural masterpiece reflects the grandeur of the Quiteño School and the influence of the Jesuit order.
