Common reed growing in a swamp area at the brink of Arresø which is the largest freshwater lake in Denmark and situated northwest of Copenhagen. This is very close to Frederiksværk, which is a small-town northwest of Copenhagen. The common reed is traditional utilized for thatched roofs in Denmark in former times.

A common very tall, stout, coarse perennial, forming extensive beds with its creeping rootstock; stems to 350cm or more, persisting through the winter as hard canes. Leaves greyish, smooth-edged to 5cm wide, collapsing in winter; ligulae in line of hairs. Inflorescence a spreading panicle, the numerous unawned, , usually dark purple spikelets with 2-10 florets and long silky hairs along the axis.Habitat: Fens, marshes, swamps, ditch sides, freshwater or brackish margins, damp clayey slopes.Flowering Season: August-October.Distribution: Throughout Europe.This is a common Species in the Netherlands in the described Habitats.
