Tall, tufted, hairless perennial to 2m; stem base corn-like. Leaves mostly basal, linear, dark greyish-green, flat, 3-6mm wide; leaf-sheaths closed at the throat. Flowering stems about two-thirds the length of the leaves, the female dark reddish-brown, becoming mottled with age, clearly separated from the male flowers by a gap of 3-8cm.\nHabitat: Freshwater margins, swamps, often forming extensive patches.\nFlowering Season: July-August.\nDistribution: Throughout Europe, north to C Scandinavia.\n\nUsed in some countries for thatching roofs.\n\nThe Species is less common than Bulrush (Typha latifolia) in the Netherlands.
