Nimbus dam is in the background with and the water is called the forebay of the dam, During the spawn after a selective number of returning salmon enter the forebay their is a gate placed across the river leaving an opening for the fish to swim towards and up the ladder and eventually into the hatchery where the eggs are harvested and fertilized. These uprights in the river hold gates the block the salmon from swiming past to the forebad of the Natomas Dam and diverts the returning Spawn to the fish ladder the base of these steps which direct the fish up the ladder to the hatchery where the salmon eggs are removed and fertilized for the future hatch.
