Yellowstone NP, Wyoming: in Hayden Valley, the Yellowstone River meanders through one of Yellowstone National Park’s broad glacial valleys, characterized by open grasslands, thermal features, and abundant wildlife. The valley, located between Yellowstone Lake and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, occupies a former glacial lake bed formed during the last Ice Age. Its flat terrain and rich vegetation make it a prime habitat for bison, elk, grizzly bears, and waterfowl, while the river’s slow, winding course contributes to extensive wetlands and meadows. The combination of geothermal activity, glacial history, and thriving ecosystems makes the Yellowstone River in Hayden Valley a key area for ecological and geological observation.

Yellowstone National Park; Wyoming; United States: the Firehole River is a major tributary of the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Originating in Madison Lake on the Continental Divide, it flows northward for about 34 kilometers (21 miles) through the park’s geyser basins, including the Upper, Midway, and Lower Geyser Basins, before joining the Gibbon River at Madison Junction. The river is notable for its unusually warm temperature, influenced by thermal runoff from numerous geysers and hot springs along its course. It supports populations of trout and is a popular site for fly fishing, while also playing an important role in Yellowstone’s hydrothermal and ecological systems.

Sour Lake, located at Mud Volcano in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, is an acidic thermal feature with a milky, grayish appearance due to suspended clay particles. It has a high acidity level, with a pH around 3, and is heated by underground geothermal activity. The lake releases hydrogen sulfide gas, giving it a strong sulfur smell, and its acidic waters contribute to ongoing erosion and landscape changes in the area.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming: the Yellowstone River, originating near Younts Peak at over 12,800 feet (3,900 meters) in the Absaroka Mountains of northwestern Wyoming's Teton Wilderness, is the longest free-flowing river in the contiguous United States, spanning 692 miles (1,114 kilometers) undammed from its headwaters to its confluence with the Missouri River in North Dakota. In Wyoming, the river flows through remote wilderness and into Yellowstone National Park, entering Yellowstone Lake—the largest high-elevation lake in North America—and exiting northward to carve the 20-mile (32-kilometer) Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, featuring the Upper Falls (109 feet or 33 meters) and Lower Falls (308 feet or 94 meters), before exiting the park near Gardiner, Montana. This Wyoming segment is noted for its pristine waters influenced by geothermal activity, support for native Yellowstone cutthroat trout, and role in the park's diverse ecosystems, with the river draining a basin of about 70,000 square miles (181,300 square kilometers) across three states.
