In front of the watchtower is the Röder Gate, which you must visit before climbing the wall. As you exit the multi-tiered gate, two stone bridges take you over the dry moat, past armed curtain walls, guardhouses, a raised gatekeeper's cottage and through three archways to reach the end. The beautiful double huts with pointed roofs at the end were used as a customs house and customs office from the 13th century. When you see the full Woodsman Tower Gate from the outside, you can experience how impressive it was in protecting the city. After returning through the gates, you are ready to climb the stairs and walk on the Rothenburg Wall.
