This tranquil sculpture by Augustus Lukeman (1872-1935) is the centerpiece of a memorial to Isador and Ida Straus, who both perished during the sinking of the Titanic in 1912. \n\nMr. Straus and his wife Ida were returning home on the Titanic when it struck the iceberg. Straus, a gentleman of that time, stayed on board and helped his wife into a lifeboat. But, according to testimony before congress, she turned back to him and said, “We have been together a number of years …Where you will go I will go.”\n\nIsador Straus was a co-owner, with his brothers, of R.H. Macy & Company (“Macy’s”.) He was an exceedingly decent and generous person. The New York Times would call him “a supporter of almost every philanthropic and charitable institution in New York, \nregardless of creed.” \n\nThe outpouring of mourning in New York City led to the creation of a small park at Broadway and 106th Street on a triangular lot. The statue faces north near the south end of the park.\n\nLukeman used Audrey Munson as his model. Munson posed for more than a dozen important statues, sculptures, and friezes, most of which still stand to this day across Manhattan and Brooklyn. She is now often called “America’s First Supermodel.”

The House of the Faun (Italian: Casa del Fauno), built during the second century BC, was one of the largest, and most impressive private residences in Pompeii, Italy, and housed many great pieces of art. It is one of the most luxurious aristocratic houses from the Roman republic, and reflects this period better than most archaeological evidence found even in Rome itself. The House of the Faun was named for the bronze statue of the dancing faun located, Fauns are spirits of untamed woodland, which literate and Hellenized Romans often connected to Pan and Greek satyrs, or wild followers of the Greek god of wine and agriculture, Dionysus.\nIn Roman mythology, fauns are place-spirits (genii) of untamed woodland. Romans connected their fauns with the Greek satyrs, wild and orgiastic drunken followers of Bacchus (Dionysus in Greek mythology).\n\n \n

The faun is a half-human and half-goat mythological creature appearing in Greek and Roman mythology.\n\nOriginally fauns of Roman mythology were ghosts ( genii ) of rustic places, lesser versions of their chief, the god Faunus. Before their conflation with Greek satyrs, they and Faunus were represented as naked men. Later fauns became copies of the satyrs of Greek mythology, who themselves were originally shown as part-horse rather than part-goat.
