A Spotted Sandpiper (Actitis macularius) in breeding plumage in the shallow water of the Salton Sea in Imperial County, southern California. This small sandpiper winters throughout the southern United States and south to South America and breeds from the central US north through much of Canada. It is possible that a small breeding population exists as far south as the Salton Sea. It has a peculiar gate, in that it bobs its rear end constantly as it walks. For most of the year it has a pure white breast and belly, but in breeding plumage it justifies its name by developing this spotted appearance.
