Beja Airport, Portugal: sonar buoys chutes - sonobuoys are used in anti-submarine warfare and submarine rescue - there are two main types, active buoys send out sonar pulses, which reflect off of the submarine, and the return is datal inked back to the aircraft, passive buoys listen for any radiated noise from the submarine contact -  hydrophone sensors and stabilizing equipment are below the water surface, the buoy relays acoustic information from its hydrophone via UHF/VHF radio to operators on board the aircraft - Lockheed P-3 Orion aircraft, a military derivative of the Lockheed L-188 Electra. Developed by Piper Aircraft Corporation, the L-4 Grasshopper was a militarized version of the Piper J-3 Cub, a popular civilian aircraft of the era.\n\nThe primary role of the L-4 Grasshopper was observation, reconnaissance, and liaison duties. It was used for artillery spotting, aerial photography, courier missions, and communication tasks, providing vital support to ground troops.\n\nThe L-4 Grasshopper saw extensive service during World War II, serving with the U.S. Army Air Forces, the U.S. Navy (as the NE-1), and other Allied air forces. It played a vital role in numerous campaigns, including the D-Day invasion of Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and the Pacific island-hopping campaign.
