In the Catalan Countries it is only found in the Pyrenees and Montseny, and in these areas it lives from 1,100 to 2450 m altitude. Its rhizome contains many essential oils in particular carline oxide which is antibacterial and the root had been used in herbal medicine as a diuretic and against the common cold. It is a symbol of good luck and is placed on the portal of country houses.$
