Purple prairie clover is a herbaceous plant, it has slender, wiry stems that branch out near the top. The most striking feature of the plant is its flowers. They are tiny, rose-purple to pinkish-purple, and clustered in dense cone-shaped spikes at the ends of the stems. The flowers bloom from early to mid-summer and begin opening from the bottom of the spike, slowly working their way up.
