The statue was created by the Swedish sculptor Bengt Erland Fogelberg (1756-1854), which received the order to carry out the work in 1845. The first casting of the statue in Germany was failed before the end of 1847, and statue was re-cast. The ship with the second copy lost off the German coast in 1851. The third copy eventually came to Gothenburg in 1854, and was erected at the city's main square, which was renamed to the Gustaf Adolf's square.
