The Sumatran tiger is a tiger subspecies whose natural habitat is on the island of Sumatra, is one of six tiger subspecies that still survive today and is classified as critically endangered in the red list of threatened species released by the IUCN World Conservation Institute. Wild populations are estimated at between 400-500, mainly living in national parks in Sumatra. Recent genetic testing has revealed unique genetic signs, which indicate that these subspecies may develop into separate species, if they are sustained.Habitat destruction is the biggest threat to the current population. Logging continues even in national parks which should be protected. 66 recorded Sumatran tigers were killed between 1998 and 2000.In 2017, the Cat Classification Task Force from the Cat Specialist Group revised the taxonomy of cats so that living and extinct tiger populations in Indonesia are now classified as P. t. sondaica

The Sumatran tiger is a population of Panthera tigris sondaica on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. It is the only surviving tiger population in the Sunda Islands, where the Bali and Javan tigers are extinct.Sequences from complete mitochondrial genes of 34 tigers support the hypothesis that Sumatran tigers are diagnostically distinct from mainland subspecies. In 2017, the Cat Classification Task Force of the Cat Specialist Group revised felid taxonomy and recognizes the living and extinct tiger populations in Indonesia as P. t. sondaica.Panthera tigris sumatrae was proposed by Reginald Innes Pocock in 1929, who described a skin and a skull of a tiger zoological specimen from Sumatra. The skull and pelage pattern of tiger specimens from Java and Sumatra do not differ significantly. P. t. sondaica is therefore considered the valid name for the living and extinct tiger populations in Indonesia.
