![The Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque / Ayasofya-i Kebir Cami-i 艦erifi, with its innovative architecture, rich history, religious significance and extraordinary characteristics has been fighting against time for centuries, is the largest Eastern Roman Church in Istanbul. Constructed three times in the same location, it is the world鈥檚 oldest and fastest-completed cathedral. Hagia Sophia (/藞h蓱藧伞i蓹 so蕣藞fi藧蓹/; from Koin膿 Greek: 峒壩澄 危慰蠁委伪, romanized: Hag铆a Soph铆a; Latin: Sancta Sophia, lit. 'Holy Wisdom'), officially the Hagia Sophia Holy Grand Mosque (Turkish: Ayasofya-i Kebir Cami-i 艦erifi)[3] and formerly the Church of Hagia Sophia,[4] is a Late Antique place of worship in Istanbul, designed by the Greek geometers Isidore of Miletus and Anthemius of Tralles.[5] Built in 537 as the patriarchal cathedral of the imperial capital of Constantinople, it was the largest Christian church of the eastern Roman Empire (the Byzantine Empire) and the Eastern Orthodox Church, except during the Latin Empire from 1204 to 1261, when it became the city's Roman Catholic cathedral. In 1453, after the Fall of Constantinople to the Ottoman Empire, it was converted into a mosque.
