This highly migratory species breeds in Arctic tundra across northern North America and Eurasia, with two subspecies—A. i. morinella in the Nearctic and A. i. interpres in the Palearctic—and winters along coastlines worldwide, favoring rocky shores, sandy beaches, and mudflats where it forages for invertebrates by flipping stones and debris. In Curaçao, it occurs as a non-breeding passage migrant and winter visitor primarily from late summer through spring, utilizing coastal beaches, rocky shores, and saline wetlands; key sites include Klein Curaçao, Playa Canoa, and Saliña Jan Thiel.
