This rather large common snapping turtle was on the side of a dirt road, probably looking for a place to lay eggs. The photographer was able to capture her extended neck from the driver's seat, but when he got out to get a full-length shot, the turtle pulled in her head, a defensive posture. According to the photographer, you really have to sneak up on them if you want to get the neck, which, along with the tail, inspired the scientific name: Chelydra serpentina. The turtle slipped into a slough after he finished shooting. Looking at this creature, it's easy to believe that turtles were around before dinosaurs. This species and the distantly related, even bigger, alligator snapping turtle occur naturally only in North America. Second in a series of three.
