Hanoi, Vietnam: at the Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu - Quốc Tử Giám) 82 stone steles, dating from 1484 to 1780, are mounted on stone turtles in the third courtyard. These steles, inscribed with names and birthplaces of 1,306 laureates from Le and Mac dynasties' exams, are recognized as a UNESCO as a Memory of the World Register site. The turtles symbolize longevity and wisdom in Vietnamese culture, supporting the steles to preserve this educational heritage within the Confucian temple, built in 1070.
