The unfinished structure of the new cathedral on the right side of the Duomo in the medieval heart of Siena, in Tuscany. The construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral or Duomo dedicated to the Assumption of Mary was completed between 1215 and 1348, becoming one of the religious architectural masterpieces of the Romanesque and Italian Gothic style. But in 1339 it was decided to expand the Cathedral, leaving the existing structure as a transept of the new construction. Unfortunately the new and larger cathedral was not completed and the structure of the unfinished main nave (in the photo) is today called the Duomo Nuovo. Siena is one of the most beautiful Italian cities of art, in the heart of the Tuscan hills, famous for its immense artistic and historical heritage and for the Palio, where the seventeen historical districts of the city compete every year in Piazza del Campo in one of the oldest horse racing in the world. Siena. The Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta or simply put Siena Cathedral is an inside as well as outside exquisitely decorated medieval church. A beautiful example of Italian Gothic architecture. My picture shows the upper part of the ornately decorated facade. Particular striking are the three mosaics depicting the Presentation of Mary, the Coronation of the Virgin and the Nativity of Jesus. Siena Cathedral, located in the province of Siena in Tuscany, Italy. The city's inner city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, because it contains buildings dating back to the 13th and 14th century. In the city are also horse races twice a year on Piazza del Campo. The Roman Catholic cathedral was completed in 1263. An addition to the cathedral started construction in the 1300's, but it was halted by the Black Death, this addition was never finished.
