Evening sunlight bathes Spider Rock and the surrounding cliffs of Canyon de Chelly in a warm, golden glow. The towering sandstone spire rises dramatically above the lush green valley floor, where trees and vegetation contrast with the deep red hues of the canyon walls. This serene scene captures the harmony between rugged desert formations and the vibrant life that thrives below.”
Spider Rock rises 800 feet from the floor of Canyon de Chelly, a striking sandstone spire that has become one of the canyon’s most iconic landmarks. According to Navajo tradition, this is the home of Spider Woman, a revered figure who taught the people the art of weaving and served as a protector of moral order. Surrounded by sheer canyon walls carved over millions of years, Spider Rock embodies both the natural wonder and the deep cultural heritage that define Canyon de Chelly. Spider Rock is in Canyon de Chelly National Monument near Chinle, Arizona, USA.

Canyon de Chelly National Monument, in northeastern Arizona, preserves nearly 5,000 years of human history within its dramatic sandstone walls. The canyon has been home to Ancestral Puebloans, known as the Anasazi, who built cliff dwellings here between 350 and 1300 CE, and to the Diné (Navajo) people who continue to live and farm within its sheltered valleys today. Carved by the forces of water and wind over millions of years, the canyon’s sheer cliffs rise to 1,000 feet above the canyon floor, revealing layers of ancient rock from the Permian period. From these rim overlooks, visitors can gaze down upon a living landscape where Navajo families maintain their traditions amidst towering formations, cottonwood groves, and sacred archaeological sites.
