$The sea life at Little Manuk, a so called rocky islet, is very interesting. Bubbles escape through the sand and rocks in places. Apparently there is still some volcanic activity. In the shallow areas there are slopes with black sand and tumbled rocks covered by algal turf and small hard corals, including large rocks with attached table Acropora between four and five metres depth. Hard coral cover almost 80% and the stress resistance, recovery, and overall reef health and resilience potentials of this coral community are all high. \n\nLarge Black Coral Antipathes sp. dominates the scenery. Funny enough, Black Corals are white! Because of their black and very solid skeleton, black coral have been worked into amulets (Greek: anti pathes = against disease) for thousands of years in the Arabian regions of the Red Sea and the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. \n\nThe wall is completely overgrown with sponges, hydroids, zoanthids, algae, tunicates and feather stars. \n\nSnappers, Hogfishes, Cardinalfishes and Damselfishes are there. \n\nLittle Manuk near Tayandu Island, Indonesia \n5°28'6.876 S 132°15'26.808 E at 18m depth$

$These are egg capsules of Bigfin Reef Squids Sepioteuthis lessoniana on a boie rope. The length of the campules varies from 5 to 8cm, containing 4 to 7 eggs each. The total incubation period of Sepioteuthis lessoniana varies between 18-23 days. As the development of the embryos progresses, the egg capsule becomes more transparent and slightly enlarged with the absorption of water. \nWithin the capsule the embryo becomes a full-grown young, when the yolk is fully absorbed. The hatched young ones of S. lessoniana are the miniature replicas of the adult cuttlefish externally with dorsal mantle length of 7 mm. \nThe chromotophores, the pigment cells, are already very clear and distributed all over the body with prominent brown dots. Squids have speedy colour-changing abilities with the chromatophores. They can rapidly change size and colour and the visual effect is enhanced by light reflecting cells, the iridocytes.
