The Yellow-crowned Night Heron (Nyctanassa violacea) is a pelecaniform bird of the Ardeidae family.It is also known as dorminhoco, matrião (some regions of the Amazon), sabacu, tamatião and taquiri (Pará) and socó-do-mangue.Its scientific name means: from the Greek nux = night; and anassa = queen, lady; and from the Latin violacea, viola = with the color of violet, violet. ⇒ Violet-colored Queen of the Night.This species measures 50 to 70 centimeters and weighs about 650 grams. The forehead is yellow or rust-colored, with the sides of the head black and a white post-ocular spot. The feathers on the back and wings are black, edged with gray, while the rest of the plumage is gray and the tarsi are long and yellowish. The robust beak varies in size according to its distribution area: if the prey in its habitat is large, then the beak will be large; otherwise, it will be somewhat smaller.
