Yellowstone National Park; Wyoming; United States: the Firehole River is a major tributary of the Madison River in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming. Originating in Madison Lake on the Continental Divide, it flows northward for about 34 kilometers (21 miles) through the park’s geyser basins, including the Upper, Midway, and Lower Geyser Basins, before joining the Gibbon River at Madison Junction. The river is notable for its unusually warm temperature, influenced by thermal runoff from numerous geysers and hot springs along its course. It supports populations of trout and is a popular site for fly fishing, while also playing an important role in Yellowstone’s hydrothermal and ecological systems.

This process creates layered, stepped deposits that build up over time, preserving the shapes and structures of underlying microbial mats. These terraces, often described as gracefully contoured shoulders along the runoff streams, host vibrant communities of thermophilic bacteria and archaea that produce the spring's iconic rainbow colors—ranging from orange and red carotenoids in warmer zones to green chlorophyll in cooler areas—through temperature-dependent pigmentation. The sinter encases successive generations of these heat-loving microorganisms, forming a geological record of ancient microbial life in this extreme hydrothermal environment, which has evolved over thousands of years.
