The Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming. The state is a great plateau broken by a number of important mountain ranges. In the northwest are the Absaroka, the Owl Creek, Wyoming, Gros Ventre, Wind River and the Teton ranges. In the north central are the Big Horns; in the northeast, the Black Hills; and in the southern portion of Wyoming, the Laramie, Medicine Bow and Sierra Madre ranges.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming: the Yellowstone River, originating near Younts Peak at over 12,800 feet (3,900 meters) in the Absaroka Mountains of northwestern Wyoming's Teton Wilderness, is the longest free-flowing river in the contiguous United States, spanning 692 miles (1,114 kilometers) undammed from its headwaters to its confluence with the Missouri River in North Dakota. In Wyoming, the river flows through remote wilderness and into Yellowstone National Park, entering Yellowstone Lake—the largest high-elevation lake in North America—and exiting northward to carve the 20-mile (32-kilometer) Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, featuring the Upper Falls (109 feet or 33 meters) and Lower Falls (308 feet or 94 meters), before exiting the park near Gardiner, Montana. This Wyoming segment is noted for its pristine waters influenced by geothermal activity, support for native Yellowstone cutthroat trout, and role in the park's diverse ecosystems, with the river draining a basin of about 70,000 square miles (181,300 square kilometers) across three states.
