Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States: the Grand Prismatic Spring, situated in Yellowstone National Park's Midway Geyser Basin, is the largest hot spring in the United States and the third largest globally, spanning approximately 370 feet in diameter and 160 feet in depth while discharging about 560 gallons of 160°F water per minute into the Firehole River via runoff channels. These channels, formed by the spring's outflow, deposit silica minerals as sinter, gradually building terraced formations that preserve ancient microbial mats beneath newer layers. The vibrant rainbow hues—ranging from blue in the sterile central pool to orange, red, yellow, and green in the margins—arise from thermophilic bacteria and algae in the runoff, where temperature gradients influence pigment production: warmer areas favor orange and red carotenoids, while cooler zones promote green chlorophyll. This microbial ecosystem, thriving in extreme heat, offers insights into early Earth life forms.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA: the travertine pools of Palette Spring in Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone National Park, are formed by hot, calcium-rich water emerging from underground sources. As the water cools and releases carbon dioxide at the surface, calcium carbonate precipitates, building terraces and rimstone pools. These pools display striking colors—white, yellow, and orange—caused by thermophilic microorganisms and mineral deposits. Constant fluctuations in water flow, temperature, and chemistry reshape the formations over time.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA: Palette Spring, located in the Mammoth Hot Springs area of Yellowstone National Park, is a prominent travertine terrace formed by hot water emerging from the Mammoth thermal system. As the mineral-rich water cools at the surface, it deposits calcium carbonate, creating the spring’s characteristic cascading formations and white to orange coloration. The vivid hues result from thermophilic microorganisms and mineral oxidation. Palette Spring is part of the dynamic hydrothermal network on the northern edge of the Yellowstone Caldera, where constant changes in water flow and temperature reshape the terraces over time.

Wyoming, United States: colorful runoff channels of the Excelsior Geyser Crater in Yellowstone National Park’s Midway Geyser Basin. The vivid orange, yellow, and brown hues result from thermophilic bacteria and archaea that colonize the mineral-rich outflow, thriving at varying temperatures along the thermal gradient. Silica and other minerals precipitate from the hot water, creating layered terraces that reflect both chemical deposition and microbial activity. This interplay of geothermal heat, minerals, and microorganisms produces one of Yellowstone’s most striking hydrothermal landscapes.
