This species can be distinguished by its blackish-brown armour plating, which covers the body, head and tail. The plating on the body forms two domed shells, separated by three armoured bands which are joined together by flexible bands of skin.
Armadillos are New World placental mammals in the order Cingulata. They form part of the superorder Xenarthra, along with the anteaters and sloths.
