A sea lion rests majestically on the rugged, weathered rocks of Tasman Island, located off the southeast coast of Tasmania, Australia. The island, known for its pristine wildlife and remote access, serves as a haven for creatures like this sea lion. Behind it, the powerful, wavy ocean crashes against the cliffs, sending mist into the air, creating a dramatic backdrop. The sea lion gazes out toward the horizon, seemingly undisturbed by the crashing waves and the isolation of the island. Tasman Island's wild beauty and harsh environment make it a rare, untamed sanctuary for those fortunate enough to witness its wildlife.

Homol'ovi is a Hopi word which means “Place of the Little Hills.” The name is very appropriate since the area is mostly flat with several buttes and other small mounds. Between approximately 1260 and 1400 CE, the area was occupied by the Ancestral Hopi. Several large villages were established during this period. These villages were part of a larger network of settlements in the region, connected through trade and shared cultural practices. The remains of these villages contain numerous artifacts, including pottery shards, stone tools, and remnants of structures. The Homolovi sites provide important insights into the lives of the Ancestral Hopi, their agricultural practices, and their interactions with neighboring cultures. By the late 14th century, the Homolovi villages were largely abandoned, likely due to environmental changes, resource depletion, or social factors. Homolovi State Park, north of Winslow, Arizona, USA was established in 1986 with the help of the Hopi tribe who considered these lands a part of their ancestral homeland. The park presently serves as a center of archeological research. It is located near the Little Colorado River in a floodplain where the natives farmed their crops. The largest of the park’s pueblos at one time contained an estimated 1,200 - 2,000 rooms. The only remaining structure is the kiva in the oldest section of the pueblo. The kiva was an underground house used for religious purposes. The Hopi people continue to make pilgrimages to the site to renew the ties of their people to the land. Also, the Hopi Tribe is actively involved in the management and interpretation of the park, ensuring that their ancestral heritage is respectfully and accurately represented. Homolovi State Park today is a testament to the enduring legacy of the Ancestral Hopi and their connection to the land. It offers a unique opportunity to explore and learn about the ancient cultures that once thrived in the region.

A single South American Sea Lion (Otaria flavescens) pup rests on a beach in central Chile. The location and its apparent lack of body fat suggest that either it is ill, perhaps with the avian flu that has killed many sea lions in the region, or that its parents are dead and that is no longer has their support.
