San Pellegrino, Umbria, Italy, May 01 -- Dozens of people participate in the celebrations of the May Festival of San Pellegrino, in the county of Gualdo Tadino, in Umbria, in central Italy. This very ancient medieval festival, born in the year 1004, celebrates the miracle of the flowering staff of San Pellegrino, a hermit who died in this village on the night between 30 April and 1 May over a thousand years ago. The celebration consists in raising a very tall poplar tree without any machinery, as a symbol of the Saint's flowering staff. This medieval celebration is among the oldest still in existence in Europe. The Umbria region, considered the green lung of Italy for its wooded mountains, is characterized by a perfect integration between nature and the presence of man, in a context of environmental sustainability and healthy life. In addition to its immense artistic and historical heritage, Umbria is famous for its food and wine production and for the high quality of the olive oil produced in these lands.
