Beja Airport, Portugal: sonar buoys chutes - sonobuoys are used in anti-submarine warfare and submarine rescue - there are two main types, active buoys send out sonar pulses, which reflect off of the submarine, and the return is datal inked back to the aircraft, passive buoys listen for any radiated noise from the submarine contact - hydrophone sensors and stabilizing equipment are below the water surface, the buoy relays acoustic information from its hydrophone via UHF/VHF radio to operators on board the aircraft - Lockheed P-3 Orion aircraft, a military derivative of the Lockheed L-188 Electra. Lisbon, Portugal: retired Fiat G.91 R/3 jet fighter aircraft - without unit or serial markings on public display on a plinth in front of the Military College building - The aircraft was developed by Fiat Aviazione in Italy and was intended to replace the F-86 Sabre within NATO. The “G” stands for Fiat Avio chief designer, Giuseppe Gabrielli. After Fiat Aviazione merged with other Italian aircraft manufacturers to form Aeritalia SpA, the designation changed to Aeritalia G.91 - The aircraft was widely used by the Portuguese Air Force in Africa (Mozambique, Angola and Guinea-Bissau provinces) in a ground attack role. It fought against African terrorist organizations, some financed and supported by the USSR or PR of China (Frelimo, MPLA, UNITA, PAIGC), but also against the FNLA, sponsored by a fellow NATO member, the US under JFK. Some aircraft were lost after the USSR supplied 9K32 Strela-2 light-weight, shoulder-fired, surface-to-air missile (MANPADS) to the terrorists. Ironically the Soviet Air Force would later face similar problems in Afghanistan with the introduction of the FIM-92 Stinger missile in Taliban service.

$An old cargo transport aircraft, the moss, staining, and streaks of dirt down its hull made some very interesting patterns. \n\nThe aircraft obviously had some military usage in its history, whether it carried troops, supplies, vehicles, or a combination of everything I don't know. The proboscis on the nose of the aircraft is for refuelling midflight, so it could fly extreme distances so long as tanker aircraft were available to refuel from.\n\nIt is a monolithic piece of engineering, and only standing on the floor under its wingspan do you get a real impression of how big these cargo planes now are, they're a feat of design and engineering, even when obsolete and left abandoned outdoors.$

$Left abandoned outside a hangar to the elements, this huge cargo plane is slowly becoming overgrown with moss and algae, the dirt is streaking down its hull, and the crevices around the engines are being used as nesting sites by birds. \n\nThe plane is monstrous however, 4 gigantic propeller engines - 2 per wing - power what was obviously once a beast of an aircraft, the size easily allowing it to carry troops, supplies, even vehicles in its hold. \n\nNow it stands as a piece of aviation history, obviously disused and obsolete, the tech has been surpassed by more moden aircraft.$
