Davidia involucrata, also called dove tree, handkerchief tree and ghost tree, is a flowering tree with showy bracts surrounding the flowers. Native to southwestern China, it has been introduced widely elsewhere. It is especially impressive when it blooms. Each flower head is accompanied by a pair of large, pure white flower bracts at the base performing the functions of petals. On breezy day, the bracts flutter in the wind like white doves or pinched handkerchiefs, hence the name for the tree.

Cornus kousa, commonly called Japanese dogwood, Kousa, and Kousa dogwood, is native to East Asia and is a small, deciduous flowering tree, with bloom occurring from late spring to early summer (May-June). Kousa dogwood “flowers” are four petal-like white bracts which surround the center cluster of yellowish-green, true flowers. Flowers are followed by berry-like fruits which mature to a pinkish red in summer.

Davidia involucrata tree flowers
Tall American beech tree (Fagus grandifolia) in dappled autumn light as its leaves start to turn color. In New England, beeches turn color later than most other trees. They will turn yellow, then brown. Beeches have distinctive smooth bark into which unthinking people carve messages. American beeches have been suffering from two new bark and leaf diseases that threaten to decimate the population. This relatively healthy tree -- with no carvings because it is on private land -- has withstood both, but it could succumb in the future. Taken in the woods of rural Litchfield County, Connecticut.
