Durham, United Kingdom - October 15, 2014 - The Cathedral Church of Christ, Blessed Mary the Virgin and St Cuthbert of Durham, commonly known as Durham Cathedral and home of the Shrine of St Cuthbert, is a cathedral in the city of Durham, England.

Durham Cathedral is a Norman building constructed between 1093 and 1133 in the Romanesque style. It was founded as a monastic cathedral built to house the shrine of St Cuthbert, replacing an earlier church constructed in his honour. Durham’s architectural value lies in the fact that it is the oldest surviving building with a stone vaulted ceiling of such a large scale. This may not seem remarkable today, but developing the know-how to roof large buildings with stone rather than wood shaped the course of European architecture from then on.

The view of the Durham Cathedral and the boathouse on the river bank of the River Wear
Durham Cathedral is renowned as a masterpiece of Romanesque (or Norman) architecture. It was begun in 1093 and largely completed within 40 years. Together with its neighbour Durham Castle, the cathedral is now a World Heritage Site. This view towards Framwellgate Bridge, one of the city's famous medieval crossings was taken late on a winters afternoon with the buildings bathed in the warm glow from a low winter sun.
