The Ring-Necked Duck (Aythya collaris) is a North American diving duck found in freshwater ponds and lakes. The duck’s name comes from the drake’s cinnamon colored neck ring. The male also has two white rings around its gray bill, a shiny black head, black back, a white line on the wings, a white breast and yellow eyes. The female has a grayish brown head and body with a dark brown back and a dark bill. The breeding habitat of the ring-necked duck is lakes and ponds in the northern United States and Canada. Ring-necked ducks pair up during spring migration and then separate after breeding. These ducks are omnivores and feed mainly by diving or dabbling for submerged plants such as pondweed, wild rice, coontail and snails. These two male ring-necked ducks were photographed while swimming in the Bubbling Ponds Fish Hatchery near Cornville, Arizona, USA.

Their ability to survive both in and out of water. During mating season the males will also develop brightly coloured spots in order to attract females. The spots can be red, green or blue. A mudskipper's eyes protrude from the tops of its flat head. Their most noticeable feature however is their side pectoral fins that are located more forward and under their elongated body. These fins function similarly to legs in that they allow the mudskipper to move from place to place.

The American Coot (Fulica americana), also known as a mud hen, is commonly mistaken for a duck. Unlike ducks, the coot doesn’t have webbed feet or a broad flat bill. Coots live near water, typically inhabiting wetlands and open bodies of water. The American Coot is a migratory bird that occupies most of North America. It lives in the western United States and Mexico year-round. During the summer breeding season, the coot can be found in the northeast United States. Coots may build floating nests and lay up to 12 eggs per clutch. American coots mostly eat algae and other aquatic plants but may eat vertebrates and invertebrate animals when available. This American Coot was photographed while grazing in the grass next to Walnut Canyon Lakes in Flagstaff, Arizona, USA.
