Colorful coral reef at the bottom of tropical sea, pulsating xenid coral, underwater landscape
Nidalia, Eleutherobia or Paraminabea? Softcorals are not easy to identify. Considering the size, the shallow depth and the abundance: probably the last one\nBut anyway: It is very beautiful! \n\nTriton Bay, Kaimana Regency, Indonesia \n3°54'2.358 S 134°6'18.81 E at 12m depth by night

Asthenosoma varium is a large urchin (25 cm) with flattened, flexible test (the plates are articulated rather than fused). Very mobile, short spines, arranged in rectangular areas, separated by spineless areas. Spines have a blue swelling close to the tip, filled with venom.Living in bay, lagoon, external reef; on sandy or rubble bottoms. The flexible test allows, changing the shape, to enter very narrow crevices. The swollen shape of the spines and the flexible test are unique features. \nAsthenosoma varium sting can be very painful, a strong local pain due to venom injection can last for hours.\nThis specimen was encountered in a very shallow tunnel in the Triton Bay, Indonesia \n3°54'51.39 S 134°7'24.81 E at 2m depth

Big Blue Octopus Octopus cyanea occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from eastern Africa to the Hawaiian Islands in a depth range from 0-150m, max. mantle length 22cm with arms to at least 80 cm. \nBig blue octopuses are found living in muddy, sandy, or rocky bottoms, and in seagrass beds. They create lairs or dens in crevices or coral rubbles within coral reefs. These dens aren't used for long term; on average individuals spend up to 35 days in one den. The average lifespan of big blue octopuses is 12 to 15 months.\nThis juvenile specimen was encountered in the Triton Bay, Indonesia \n3°54'41.052 S 134°7'18.204 E at 12m depth

Next to Tayandu Island there are Karangs, shallow areas that reach a few meters below the surface. They are full of life. Table Acropora exceeded three metres in size here, reaching up to four metres.\nThis colony was badly damaged. Damage happens often by mix of storms, earthquakes and destructive fishing practices. \nThis colony has a good overgrowth of dead portions, a high lesion repair. The white edges are the growth zones.\nIn 2023, when this photo was taken, the stress resistance, recovery, and overall reef health and resilience potentials of this coral community were all high.\nKarang Huisman, Tayandu Island, Indonesia, \n5°28'41.72 S 132°13'21.31 E at 11m depth
