Lisbon, Portugal: Ram Air Turbine (RAT) is a small propellor that will deploy in a serious emergency to supply emergency backup electrical power to the aircraft. Usually this happens after all main engines and the APU (auxiliary power unit) fail. Behind the two-blade propeller a hydraulic pump can be seen, besides power, the RAT provides emergency hydraulic pressure.
