SPRING OF JUTURNA The fountain named after Juturna, which collected the waters of a spring, dates to the archaic period (6th century BC). According to legend Castor and Pollux, the divine twins horsemen who led Rome to victory over the Latins (499 BC), were seen here watering their horses and it was thus decided to build the nearby temple in their honour. The fountain was rebuilt several times between the 2nd and 1st century BC and again in the imperial period: it was clad in marble and a pedestal in the centre held the statues of the Dioscuri. In the basin an altar is preserved with depictions of the twins.

Rome Italy - Located in the ancient Foro Romano or Ancient Roman Forum, the temple was begun in 141 AD by the Emperor Antoninus Pius and was dedicated to his wife Faustina the Elder. After his death in 161 AD, it was re-dedicated jointly to Antoninus and his wife on the instruction of his successor, Marcus Aurelius. The temple was converted to a Roman Catholic church and known as San Lorenzo in Miranda, perhaps in the seventh century, but it seems to be attested only from the eleventh century AD. Christianisation has accounted for the survival of the Cella and Portico of the temple, but the marble cladding of the Cella had been scavenged. The church lacks the usual east-end apse: one was never added, to retain the temple's structural integrity.
