Yokohama, Kanagawa, Japan - July 12, 2025: The large white patrol vessel Akitsushima (PLH-32, 7,350 tons, w/ helicopter) of the Japanese Coast Guard is prominently docked in Yokohama. Its formidable structure, including its mast and various equipment, is visible under an overcast sky. Another, smaller patrol vessel, the Large PL10 Buko (1,700 tons, w/o helicopter), is partially visible behind it. In the foreground, a grassy area and paved walkway are filled with numerous tourists and visitors observing the vessels, indicating a public viewing area.

Rota is one of the lesser known islands of the Northern Mariana Islands. The Mariana Islands are on the edge of the Philippine Plate. They were formed by underwater volcanoes along the Marianas Trench. The northern islands are high volcanic islands and the southern islands, while volcanic in origin, are capped by uplifted limestone derived from coral reefs. The southern islands have the oldest and most developed reefs which are predominantly located along the western (leeward) sides.
