Aucuba japonica, commonly called Spotted laurel, Japanese laurel, Japanese aucuba and Gold dust, is a dense, upright evergreen shrub, prized for its lush foliage of glossy, rich green leaves mottled with golden yellow. In early to mid spring, small purple flowers, adorned with creamy white anthers, appear from the leaf axils (female plant), or in terminal panicles (male plant). When pollinated, bright, glossy red berries appear from the female flowers that ripen in autumn and often persist until spring.
