Hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA) infestation on underside of eastern hemlock branch in Connecticut. This tiny sapsucking insect from Asia, discovered in Virginia in 1951, is a major killer of eastern hemlocks, which are vitally important to Northeastern forest ecosystems. HWA is named for its woolly egg masses. Thanks to introduction of the Japanese ladybeetle, a predator of HWA, many hemlocks in Connecticut have survived since the first waves of tree mortality some 35 years ago.

Euphorbia cyparissias, or Cypress Spurge, is a perennial herb with erect stems, narrow and needle-like leaves, and yellow, crescent-shaped glands on the rim of its cup-shaped flowers. The flowers appear in spring and early summer, consisting of lime-yellow bracts that slowly fade to red-orange as they mature. It spreads by rhizomes and can be quite invasive.

$Cladonia is a genus of moss-like lichens in the family Cladoniaceae. They are the primary food source for reindeer/caribou. $Indian Feather Duster Worm Sabellastarte spectabilis occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean from the Arabian Sea to Hawaii in intertidal and subtidal reefs in a depth range from 3-30m. It is quite a large species, with a tube up to 30cm and a single crown of about 10cm in diameter, feeding by filtering plankton and organic particles from the water column. \nAs a defence mechanism, these creatures are able to quickly retreat into their tubes, when disturbed by potential predators. It may come as a surprise, but Sabellastarte has eyes! \nCrowns of this species often have a banded pattern in a variety of colors including browns, red, white and yellow.
