Baths of Caracalla, ancient ruins of roman public thermae built by Emperor Caracalla in Rome, Italy
The Baths of Caracalla (Italian: Terme di Caracalla) in Rome, Italy, were the city's second largest Roman public baths, or thermae, after the Baths of Diocletian. The baths were likely built between AD 212 (or 211) and 216/217, during the reigns of emperors Septimius Severus and Caracalla. They were in operation until the 530s and then fell into disuse and ruin.
The Baths of Caracalla (Terme di Caracalla) in Rome, Italy
A suggestive cityscape of the Palatine Hill and the Circus Maximus public park, in the core of the Ancient Rome. The Palatine Hill was a sacred place for the Romans where, according to tradition, the city was founded. The Roman emperors Augustus, Tiberius and Domitian built their immense imperial palaces on this hill (up in the photo). The Circus Maximus, below in the photo, was the largest oval circus in the ancient world, where thousands of Romans watched epic horse and chariot races. The Roman Forum, one of the largest archaeological areas in the world, represented the political, legal, religious and economic center of the city of Rome, as well as the nerve center of the entire Roman civilization. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Image in high definition format.

The remains of the Alexander Nymphaeum in the central park of Piazza Vittorio, in the historic heart of Rome. This monumental fountain, built during the Severi dynasty between 193 and 235 AD and fed by the Claudius aqueduct, marked the highest point of the Esquiline hill and the confluence of the consular roads Tiburtina and Collatina. Dedicated to the first King of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II, Piazza Vittorio is the center of the Esquilino district, and the largest square in Rome. At the beginning of the twentieth century the Esquilino district, famous for its large and elegant buildings, was considered one of the most exclusive districts of the city. Currently it is a more popular and multi-ethnic quarter, with the presence of many families and workers of Asian and North African origin, much loved by the younger generations for the presence of restaurants, trendy pubs and discos. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Image in high definition format.
